President’s Update
As we continue to struggle with the challenges COVID-19 has brought to our personal and professional lives, I would like to once again offer my appreciation for the hard work and dedication shown by you and your organizations as we’ve now battled through more than a year in this pandemic. Reflecting on the work of the past year has reminded me why I originally chose to work in healthcare: to somehow help others in need, particularly when they can’t help themselves.
While I know it likely isn’t part of your daily routine, I’d like to challenge you with the task of reminding yourself of your own “why” on a frequent basis. Write it on a post-it note and place it on your computer screen, set a weekly reminder to pop up on your phone, or better yet, engage with your friends and family on why you chose healthcare and how lucky you are to be able to live out your personal mission through your work. It may sound a bit silly, but it really works and you might even build a stronger bond with those people closest to you.
ACHE has a “why” you can find on their website and I hope you all are in tune with what it is: to help you achieve your personal best while making healthcare safer, more accessible and affordable to all. Basically, to help you live out your why.
We have recently made a call out to our membership to nominate some individuals and teams in the Central Florida community who have stepped above and beyond to live our their “why” during these tough times to advance the mission of ACHE. I want to take a moment in this address to call them out for their hard work, dedication, innovation and focus on what matters most in healthcare and in the lives of our community members and patients. We presented these individuals and groups with awards virtually this year to ensure safe physical distancing. Check out the videos here.
I’m including those awards videos right here in this newsletter because I want you all to know what matters to this organization of which you are a member. We are committed to integrity, lifelong learning, leadership and diversity and inclusion. I believe these awards are testimony to these commitments. My hope is that you recognize that the efforts of these recipients as well as your own continued efforts to make a difference in the communities you serve for the people who need it most, are truly appreciated.
Like you, I look forward to when we will be able to return safely to in-person events – where we can more authentically experience new connections, reconnect with old friends, enjoy a meal and learn from the many experts we’re fortunate to have in Central Florida. As we see an influx in new cases, we will continue to make the decision to keep our communities safe though impactful virtual content. I hope to see you at our next event.
Thank you for the opportunity to serve with you all.
Sincerely,
Neil Mangus, MHA, FACHE

A List of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Resources
Executives are valued for what they know and how they apply it. Healthcare executives are no different. They also share in the added responsibility of making decisions that affect the quality of life for patients, their families, healthcare professionals, and the communities in which they serve. Perhaps in no other industry does a diverse and inclusive workforce have the potential to effect positive change in serving others. Here’s a list of 50 articles about Diversity and Inclusion to help leaders better grasp the importance of D&I:
